Catedral Primada De America

The first Cathedral of the Americas

In 1514 the first stone of this cathedral was set down by Christopher Columbus’s son, Deigo Columbus. Despite this, construction of the Church didn’t begin until the bishop, Alejandro Jeraldini, arrived in 1521. The construction didn’t stop after that until 1540 when it was completed. Because of low funding, the steeple of the cathedral was never built. In the 1586 assault on the city, Drake and his pirates used the place as a headquarters, vandalizing and stealing parts of it before they left. It was known to be the first cathedral in the Western Hemisphere (still standing), and an amazing one for its vaulted ceilings and 14 interior chapels. This cathedral continues to serve as the most important site for official ceremonies and religious celebrations. 500-year-old oil paintings can also be found in this cathedral. Additionally, this is the site where Christopher Columbus’s remains were found in the 19th century.
