The Dominican Republic officially proclaimed itself  independence on February 27, 1844. This was after being controlled by Haiti for almost 30 years. It is regarded as the most important holiday in the D.R., and is celebrated throughout the country in many ways. They set off fireworks, march in parades, and dress in traditional costumes. The people of the country also enjoy particularly cultural foods, drinks and more.

The Punta Can Carnival usually takes place during the first weekend of February. It also actually originated when African slaves were brought to the D.R. along with their traditions. Ultimately, the carnival is a celebration of Dominican Heritage. This comes from Indigenous Taíno, African, and European descent. The day is celebrated with a huge parade filled with lively music, colorful parades, and traditional costumes. There is also a lot of dancing and traditional food to taste.
